U18 play Potters Bar Whites

Performance of the season in a close game

This was to be the 3rd time we would face unbeaten potters Bar whites who are currently 2nd in the table. Taking on board potters bars style of play we knew we had to shut down the over the top ball and watch those runners.

We started a little slow and their first ball in led to an early goal, we fought back and equalised but the flag went up for offside. They caught us on the break but their first shot was saved by an amazing save from our Goalie Omar, unfortunately that wasn't going to be enough and they slotted it in off the rebound.

We were not going to give up without a fight and realising we needed to up our game we started to dominate. Potters Bar struggled to clear the ball out of their half and we were pressuring their defence, our persistence finally paid off and Harrison knocked it in, to take it to 2-1.

We completely blocked out their style of play, we were quick, strong and decisive in our passing. The team were going from strength to strength. We hit the cross bar and had 3 good chances before finally equalising from a superb corner from Stan to Ollie.w who headed it in passed the keeper. We were level and looked like the team that would go on to get the next goal.

Just before half time Potters Bar were awarded a questionable free kick to the left hand side of the 18 yard box it was crossed in nicely to the far post and headed in. However much to the frustration of the players the referee failed to see the shove in the back to our Welwyn player. But we didnt give up and did not let this determine the rest of the game.

Coming out after half time we continued to shut down their passes and put pressure on their players forcing them to make mistakes. They were becoming frustrated with us and it was starting to tell. We had at least 6 good chances and another goal disallowed, and were denied a penalty. We were starting to tire and you could see the pain in the players faces as they continued to try and find the equaliser. It was not meant to be and the final score ended 3-2 but it was a game that should have been ours.

I could not be prouder of the team and how they have progressed this was the game of the season so far. They showed character and grit. They came off the pitch tired and bruised but knowing their was nothing else they could've done. The football was 10/10 and it was a game to remember!! Their coach even stated 'this was the toughest game we have had all season'. Well done to the lads and I'm just glad that they know how brilliant they are win or loose!
